Are banks closed on MLK day?

Why are gov't offices closed for MLK day but not for Presidents Day?

  • I am very glad for what MLK did, and I am grateful that I am fortunate enough to live in this world after he made a difference, but aren't our fore-fathers just as important to the establishment of rights in this country? I mean, where would we be without George Washington & Abraham Lincoln? I don't think that Martin Luther King, Jr. would have succeeded in anything without their path-laying before him. What do you think?

  • Answer:

write your congress man or women and ask them that one see if they can actually give a good answer.

They closed for President's Day where I live.

USPS and banks are closed, so I am assuming that other gov't agencies will be as well.

The proper name for that holiday is actually Washington's Birthday, and it is indeed a Federal holiday for which many workers do get the day off, including those in Lansing, Michigan and Kirksville, Missouri. This may vary by juristiction. Many corporations stopped closing down on the day in the late 1980's in responce to the fact that public opinion was turning towards Martin Luther King Jr. Day being a corporate holiday as well and companies did not want to be shuttered for two days so close together.
