Why do people celebrate Valentine's day?

Why do people celebrate Valentines day and what is its essence ?

  • Answer:

Since this question is asked in Y!As India, I presume you are an Indian! Now, we Indians don't show Love overtly...we are taught to hide it under layers of lies! So, we don't celebrate Love Day...instead some fanatics even go to the extents of vanadalising shops selling Valentine merchandise and booting love-birds out of public places...All in the name of "Our Culture" and maintaining its values (as if violence is "Our Culture"). That said, consider St. Valentine as a western counterpart of our own Kamdeva....just for making understanding easier :) In "Our culture" we have days devoted to husbands, such as Karva Chauth. But VD is considered "Corrupting" because love before marriage is frowned upon by the extremists... As for why? It is just another day dedicated to human concept of Love!!!

It is the Western version of Basant Panchmi hope you know that. Indian youth Often boasts of being a proud Indian but never bothers to celebrate Basant Panchami with the same zeal as Valentine's day.

Be brave young lovers wherever you are..... Swamy has the history and it can be a beautiful day when people in love show their love openly with flowers and cards and special meals etc.... I am an old lady now, however, my honey and I made a special date and ate at Maccas with Krispy Kremes for dessert!! Just for fun..... He bought me my favourite flowers (lilies), chocolates (Baileys and Coco (which is my nickname)) and I got him a bouquet of chupa chups and a book of Sudoku..... the cards were beautiful. Yes Prince, I am from India and lived there for the first 24 years of my life, I still miss my beloved India.
