The holiday was created by Dr. Maulaua Karenga, a scholar-activist who is a professor at Cal State in Long Beach CA The word KWANZAA comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits." A celebration of seven days from Dec 26th through Jan 1st. the time in African culture is called "the time when the edges of the year meet" I myself find this to be a tradition that could be followed by many cultures. I learned about this myself a few years ago when it appeared as a big thing all of a sudden in the news, too bad something so good has to get press to be heard...
