Why is Yahoo's homepage moving me to the Mobile Yahoo?

Does anyone think the animated ads on Yahoos homepage are too distracting?

  • I know websites need to get revenue from advertisements but all the busy moving animated GIF and Flash ads on Yahoo's homepage makes it difficult to read the articles. I know they want to make them eye catching but you'd think they would at least be set to stop being annoying after at least a few seconds to a minute. It's hard to read the articles while you see movement out of the corner of your eyes. I've actually stopped reading articles on Yahoo all together. Like I said, I understand they need to advertise but at the same time they are making their homepage too annoying and distracting. If I ever create a website I would NOT allow animated adverts on the homepage unless they were programmed to stop moving by at least 15 to 30 seconds. Some people can ignore them but it's like trying to read while someone is waving their hand close to you. It's annoying! And comes off as rather desperate and sad.

  • Answer:

YES!!! They are annoying in the extreme wherever they turn up. I run Fire Fox and they have an add-on/plug-in (not sure which it is) called Ad Block Plus. All you have to do is either right-click on the ad or click on the "block" tab that sometimes appears when you hover over the ad and add it to your blocked ad filter list. The offending ad immediately disappears. I think Ad Block Plus works on other browsers as well, but I only know about Fire Fox. The more people start using programs like ABP and use it to block annoying flashing ads, the more webmasters and advertisers will begin to realise that WE DON'T LIKE THEM and maybe, just maybe, they'll either take your advice and make them stop after a few seconds, or stop using them all together. It's not just that these ads annoy many people - for the sight-impaired, it can make reading articles downright impossible. It's high time advertisers (and webmasters) wised-up and stopped this nonsense. Google (or use Yahoo search LOL) Ad Block Plus (it's free, btw) and be free of these annoying ads! I've never had a single problem using ABP and any action you take is totally reversible.
