On my avator area it talks about points and levels,what is that used for?

i just joined this website and i see you get points for answering points and stuff,but i completely don't understand the levels.I also wanna know what the points are used for.

They just allow you to move up levels and do more on yahoo answers, other than that they are pretty worthless/
