What is a blog and how do u use it?

How can I make my own blog? Where? Also is it okay to use products and names in the blog, say for fashion?

  • I want a blog about fashions and beauty trends. Where's the best place for one and is it okay to use brands and names in my blog without permission? For example if I used loreal or sephora in my blog... Please don't respond if you don't have real knowledge on this subject... Like you have your own blog or know about website design etc. Thanks and hope you all can help!

Hi, First, you have ample number of blogging services that provide you free blogging space and paid blogging space. The prime reason people go for paid blogging space is for the fact that: 1) it helps you build authority over your readers. 2) you can customize the blog as you will. You have full freedom to express your thoughts, which includes the name of brands, etc. I own a blog about technology and web designs; I pretty much write about all the products that come to the market and the products that I feel my readers would be benefited. If you have any problems in hosting your own site ping me @ levoltz [at] gmail.com, i'll help you out.

I would say kee's answer was probably the most complete but I would also add that writing about product lines and companies is nothing new and you should not have a problem with it. Most of the time this is how some bloggers rank because they use popular names that people are searching for. I would recommend setting up your own blog on your own hosting account. I have seen too many times where blogger's content gets taken off because some admin guy didn't think the content or where the links were going was proper. I hope that helps.

Sites like blogger.com allow users to set up blogs for free. They have a step by step guide. In order to get revenue you need a sponsor like google or another affiliate program. There is a place on blogger to set up Google Adsense right from the site. This will allow you to advertise google ads on your blog. You get paid by people clicking on your site and its links. I believe it is okay to use names and products, but I'd do more research about that.

You'll need to make some decisions regarding how you would like to construct your blog. Those preferences and your skills will help determine which blog service is best for you. You can either run a blog-centered web site mostly by yourself or use a developer-hosted blog service to start a blog. If you want to create a web site controlled mostly by you (i.e. a stand-alone/self-hosted blog), then you would likely need money - $10 to $160 - to pay for a web host and/or domain name (prices vary regarding time range and offered features). You may need to purchase blogging software as well. There are some services that are all-inclusive - web hosting, domain name, blogging software in one package. See http://www.problogger.net/archives/2006/02/15/choosing-a-blog-platform/ for more details regarding your choices. This may be your best option if you want to help ensure that the blog stays active for a long time (provided that you can continually fund its existence). There are typically free options, which are developer-hosted blogging services, where most of the blogging functions are automated and provided by the blogging service. Rules regarding content may be more restrictive. You would have to check the site's policies regarding the use of their service to generate profit or advertise. Less web page coding skills are required. Also, visitors may need to be a member of the service and/or a connected "friend" in order to comment on content. Some blogging services (like Blogger, Wordpress, LiveJournal and Vox) allow multiple authors, so you can have more than one person posting blogs instead of just commenting on them. Social-networking sites have features that extend beyond just blogging and are geared toward connecting with other profiles. Investigate and register with one of the following services to begin creating blog entries: Free blogging services: Blogger/Blogspot (http://blogger.com ), Wordpress (http://wordpress.com ), Livejournal (http://livejournal.com ), Vox (http://vox.com ), Typepad (http://typepad.com ), Travelpod (http://www.travelpod.com/ ), Tumblr (http://www.tumblr.com/ ), Yahoo! Shine (http://shine.yahoo.com - already registered just go to the site) Free social-networking services with blogging capabilities: MySpace (http://myspace.com ), Facebook (http://facebook.com ), Multiply (http://multiply.com ), Xanga (http://xanga.com ), Windows Live Spaces (http://spaces.live.com/ ), Ning (http://ning.com ), Yahoo! Profiles (http://profiles.yahoo.com - already registered just go to the site). Bebo (http://www.bebo.com/ ) and Gaia (http://www.gaiaonline.com/ ) are sites geared toward teenagers. See these sites for general blogging tips. You would have to consult the Help pages of the blog site/platform that you choose for further service-related specifics: Problogger: http://problogger.net Daily Blog Tips: http://www.dailyblogtips.com/ Blogging Tips: http://www.bloggingtips.com/ Blogging 101: http://www.bloggingbasics101.com/ You may want to check out http://blog-services-review.toptenreviews.com/ and http://social-networking-websites-review.toptenreviews.com/ which provides a listing of top services and features (excluding Y!360 from the blog list). --------------------------------------… You are asking about using company "trademarks". The best resource regarding blogger's rights is the Electronic Frontier Foundation site and they have a "Blogger's Legal Guide". You should read the trademarks section regarding what type of usage is allowed. Every type of trademark usage is NOT okay. See http://www.eff.org/issues/bloggers/legal/liability/IP#trademark for details. NOTE: You may want to post future blogging questions in the Computers & Internet > Programming & Design category and/or the relevant subcategory under Computers & Internet > Internet.
