How Would I Fix my Xbox 360 Ring of Death problem?

  • I was playing a game on my xbox 360 when i had to go do a quick task so i turned it off. When i came back and tried to turn my xbox back on i got the 3 rings of death. I also noticed that the outlet plug to the AC adapter was loose. i've had this xbox 360 for about a year. I don't know if I should just let it cool or what? Please comment.

    1st get motherboard of the 360 out then look at the xclamp 2nd remove it so you can take off the small heatsink 3rd clean the compound of the gpu Nail polish remover and cotton bud could do a clean gpu is mirrior finish 4th re apply some compound (i like to put a dot on and smear it around with a card any compound works but i use OCZ Freeze) 5th re apply the heatsink now except with one less pair of washers for closer connection 6th put it back in the bottom part of the case Bake xbox360 on purpose to loosen the solder joints so they can realign 7th After good and overheated turn it off and leave off for 20 or 30min to cool put the cd drive back it 8th turn on and most lickly not see the rings i give a 95% this will work some xboxs have other issues that make this actually not do anything but usually work 9th see it works seal it up put the motherboard back before turning on The towel trick is a on off trick that a good chance it will get the RoD again

if its three lights then you can send it into microsoft and get it repaired free since microsoft extended the warranty for that type of failure. If you want to call them to see if your xbox qualifies call 1-800-4MY-XBOX

My Xbox 360 just did the same thing. TRUST ME ON THIS the towel trick will only make it work for a lil bit more. What it does it overheats the inside of the box, so your just going to make it worse. If you get 3 red rings, your warranty moves up to 3 years, so it will be free to ship it in and let them fix it. Only bad thing is that you wont have it for about a month.

the towel trick worked for me also but i eventually after 1 month had to send it in, also MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR HARD DRIVE OFF WHEN YOU DO IT. i dont know if it damaged my harddrive or what but on one of my profiles the save data was COMPLETELY gone. good luck!
