What is a 360 profile?

What makes Yahoo think the NEW Profile page is better than 360?

  • The Profile page is nothing like 360. First of all, the images are too small and it's not graphic and as detailed as 360.

  • Answer:

Here is my letter to Yahoo. An Open Letter to Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz Dear Ms Bartz, I have been a loyal user of Yahoo! 360 since July of 2005. I found 360 to be the place I wanted to call home. It was designed to attract mature people. Other social sites are geared more towards children. All the features we enjoyed were there. We can set up a custom background image, display more than one photo, have a blog where people can comment back, and other very good features. But one by one Yahoo began to remove the features. Our ability to send photos and graphics was denied us without warning or comment. Then our ability to post videos in our blogs was denied, also for no reason. Now we are being forced into a page that you call a profile. You announce that you are closing 360 down. We are being forced into this anemic profile where we cannot customize the page to make it look and function like our 360 page does. This is not what we want. It makes more sense to integrate the features you want in the profile into 360. In the profile page you have a checkbox “Allow my connections to share my information labeled “My Connections” with third-party applications they install and developers who made the applications”. In my profile this checkbox will NEVER be checked. In fact I plan to abandon Yahoo altogether with the exception of my email address and Yahoo Messenger. I ask you to reconsider this decision. Please fix Yahoo! 360 rather than abandon it, and all your loyal users.

Bottom line it sucks. It's an inferior product masterminded by Yahoo's international team who cares only about the bottom line and not their customers. When jerry was ousted from Yahoo, the powers who rule with greed, drool and lust began the destruction of Yahoo. Now they are even talking of finally selling out to Microsoft. That will be the final death knell...

The Yahoo! Profile beta has been in existence since October 2008. It is an ongoing project. If you would like to make a suggestion to the Yahoo! Profile staff about features, you can do so via the Yahoo! Profile blog at http://www.yprofileblog.com . Note that the Yahoo! Profile is not meant to be a direct replacement for Yahoo! 360, so not all features enjoyed on 360 will be available in the new profile. The Yahoo! Profile is actually an upgraded version of the old Yahoo! Members Profile. It's NOT the "new 360". Here is a Yahoo! Staff answer regarding this aspect (http://www.yprofileblog.com/blog/2009/05/29/yahoo-360-to-shut-down/#comments ): "May 29th, 2009 at 12:29 pm Mike, Profiles isn’t supposed to be a complete replacement/substitution for 360. We wholly acknowledge that there are some things you can do on 360 that you can’t do on profiles, but there are also lots of things you can do on profiles that you couldn’t do on 360. As for why all the features aren’t currently available, that’s because profiles is an evolving product that will continue to add and change features as necessary. Based on the feedback we received from users, the option to blog was on top of their list– which is why we implemented it first. Profiles isn’t supposed to be Facebook or MySpace– if you still want to use those sites, go for it! Yahoo! is so much to so many people, so creating a system that caters to every one of our users is going to be incredibly hard, no matter who designs it, or what company puts it out. Profiles isn’t supposed to be a social network, however, if you want it to be one because all your friends are already on Yahoo!, we hope to give you the tools that allow you to make that happen. But, if you’re totally opposed to the “connections” thing and don’t want to share anything with anyone, you have that option to. When profiles was designed/engineered/developed/dreamed it was supposed to be a site that allowed you to do as much or as little with the outside world as you please. Don’t want to share anything? No problem. Disable updates and make your profile private. Want to share a little with just the people you know? That’s where connections come in. Want to share everything with everyone? Make your profile public. If you want to be more social and share your “goings on” across the web, that’s where the “Share More” tab comes into play. As we’ve said since launch, we’re actively listening (and responding!) to user feedback, and implementing blogging is just one of those ways. (We also updated the way you change your status messages today, and, added the guest pass feature, which users said they’d like to see). Profiles isn’t a static product and we plan on adding even more functionality in the coming months– we just need to hear from you all, what’s important, and prioritize it accordingly. -Melissa" You can read more about Yahoo's "Open Strategy", how the Y!Profile fits into that new direction, and Yahoo executives' opinions about Yahoo! 360 via the following links: * http://developer.yahoo.net/blog/archives/2008/04/introducing_the_1.html * http://ycorpblog.com/2008/10/16/your-social-control-panel * http://news.cnet.com/8301-13953_3-10041155-80.html * http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10067445-2.html * http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-ZctuWFowaK7nKTg-?cq=1 or http://ashpatel.wordpress.com

It actually functions more efficiently than 360 does, which has always taken forever to load any page or feature. But like you, I don't prefer it. It's too generic. Bland, bland, bland. And I don't like the new way they have to upload photo's into your blog. The other way was much easier. But whatever. I would just like it if they could provide some design features like they had on 360.
