Answer:
Yes, it is true. Yahoo! will be providing an alternative to Yahoo! 360 and will move all profiles, photos, blogs, etc. to the new service.

Yahoo has decided to combine it's 3 services (360, Mash, and the regular Yahoo Members Profile) that basically accomplish the same thing (i.e. telling the world about yourself) into one service. They just haven't pinned down the "how" of creating this "universal profile". What other people call "closing", I call "reconstruction." There's no point in contacting Y!360 about it because they are no longer fixing bugs. So, if there are things that you do like about Yahoo! 360 that you would like to see remain in tact, you should state those aspects on the Y!360 team's blog at http://blog.360.yahoo.com/product_360 . That is also where you can read about the changes in store for Y!360. To read my view of the situation and tips, see http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-4D4zxsg6fLRvC60pERfR7.8c?p=417 . Yahoo! 360 is not a competitive service compared to MySpace and Facebook. It has many glitches that haven't been solved in the last few years. It's a latecomer to the scene and lags in the amount of users. So, Yahoo! is struggling to gain some hold in the social networking market - whether it focuses on adult users or not. Simply, the service hasn't been working well.

Yes, it's true. Why? Because there is myspace, facebook and linkedin.
The answer is 42.
I came to answers to find out why my 360 icon disappeared on my toolbar and heard about the changes coming around the corner. I truly like 360 and prefer it much more than myspace. The transition to Flickr went fairly smooth for me; so am looking on the bright side. From another answer to this question someone said that there is a link on our 360 pages "360 News" at the top, above the other menu selection. I will be checking it out and learning about what is on the way. Gathering from other answers to similar questions, seems Yahoo wants to consolidate profiles and member directory. Personally I like how the Yahoo services are becoming integrated. My favorite is playing LaunchCast on the Messenger :) :)

Some people are scared of change, some are fed up with Yahoo, some don't like the uncertainty, some feel that Multiply is an acceptable backup in case they don't like the changes, and etc. I am patiently waiting for the changes to come, which will be in early 2008. I just don't find it necessary to start jumping around to other services - especially new and unproven ones - yet. Just manually backup your content and there shouldn't be much of an issue. There may be some downtime at some point, but Yahoo claims to be creating a transfer tool to move your content & friends to the new platform. The 360 service is pretty buggy right now, but not impossible to use and it's still one of the securest networking services around.

I've never used it. Don't know anyone that does. Could be lack of interest. Or, most likely, a false rumor.
