Why won't my profile picture or name change update in the system?

I go to "Edit my preferences" and go to the field to change my name and avatar, but after I close the box, my picture and name just go right back to the way it was before I tried to change it. What can I do to get it to update in the system? I have tried logging out and in, deleting my cache, and changing my preferences on the avatars page.
