Why do we have to wait 4 hours to choose a best answer?

    This is to allow as many answers as possible -- you may actually get a BETTER answer than the one you think is best, even later (though doubtful!). I wish they would shorten it to 1 hour! Noone seems to answer questions older than that.

If the limit was really short, there would be fewer questions for people to answer and it would be more difficult to participate in the community.

I think they should up it to at least a day... the first question I asked, it took 18 hours for the best answer I was going to get to show up- if I had voted on a best answer as soon as I could have and resolved the question, I would not have seen the better answer. Besides this, I've seen waaaay too many questions where someone chose a "blah advice" answer after 4-6 hours to move on, leaving answers that were superior insight (depth of explanation) or an altogether more realistic view of things out in the cold.

So you can get a better assortment of answers. I agree, if you get the answer that you are looking for you should be able to resolve it.
