What are the points on Yahoo?

Question about Yahoo ANswers scoring system...how do you get less points than what you earn?

  • Today, I opened my email to find I had three Best Answers. Thats a total of 30 points added to my account, right? Now, I got a total of 18 thumbs up on all three responses, and a total of 3 thumbs down on ALL three responses. But, when I clicked on the email and it brought me to the site, my account said "Congrats! You just earned 27 points!" So, if I should have received 30 points on my account, why did only 27 post to the account? Was I robbed of 3 points for the three thumbs down? If so, why wasnt I also awarded for the 18 thumbs up? WTF is going on with this system? Same thing happened yesterday when I received 5 Best Answers and only got 45 points on my account... Best Answer gets.....well, whatever Yahoo feels like crediting your account with, I guess...

Here is what the problem is. The 'alert' window ONLY POSTS the LAST SIX things that happen with your account. Same is true of the "Activity Details" tab on your profile. The points are still being added, just behind the scenes, where you can't see them. For example, let's take a sign-in with 3 BA's, with 3 thumbs up each. Here is what will POST -- +1 (signin) +3 (thumbs #3)) +10 (BA #3) +3 (thumbs #2) +10 (BA #2) +3 (thumbs #1) --------------- +30 TOTAL That is ALL that will post -- as you see, the +10 for BA#1 is missing, pushed off the page by the +1 of the signin. But, it is still added to your points, believe me. The ONLY way to be certain of this is to check your points at end of day -- and again when you log in. I've done it -- it's ALL there.

Didn't you get any violations, for questions or for answers? There are many glitches, here, these last days, including avatars that don't show. This could be one of them, it happened before, a couple of months ago. Yesterday, I couldn't access the third page of answers to one of my questions. There's always something... *sigh* I wouldn't waste my energy trying to understand Yahell, it's impossible!! Have a great day!! :)

I've noticed that too, but just never really cared enough to ask a question about it. I figure the life span of most IDs is so short that it's kind of pointless to really obsess over the points. But it's possible that you were credited for one of the best answers yesterday before you got out of Y!A - I notice that I get best answer points an hour or so before I get the e-mail.

The on screen notification only shows the past 5 or 6 transactions and I believe that it only shows changes for the past few hours. To get an accurate number. Write down your current points and check your activity detail in the profile periodically and see if the points change correctly. Even that is difficult if you have many overnight transactions. After you have thousands of points it really doesn't matter. ✩

Did you just login? When you login for the first time each day, you get 1 point. If you then ask a question, that is -5 points. 1-5=-4. That is the only thing I can think of that would explain what you described.
