Stop me if you've heard this one before - but would a small monthly fee drastically improve Yahoo! Answers?
-
Let us hypothetically say each user contributed £3.50 ($5.20 or so) per month. And since I am in a good mood, I will even let Y!A keep their dodgy RH corner adverts for extra revenue. The way I see it, paying even a small fee like this would:- 1) Dramatically reduce the multiple account users 2) Dramatically reduce sustained immature users whose lives seem to revolve cyclically between Messrs. Jonas and Missus Cyrus 3) Make people more inclined to comply with the guidelines and therefore overall improve the level of service by other users in Y!A Now, in return, I would expect Yahoo! Answers to drop this ridiculous community moderation lark and seriously review the reporting procedure. At the moment, those who hold the bitterest grudges can rule with an iron fist. I understand all about the ethos of Yahoo! being a free site, but I did say HYPOTHETICALLY. Any thoughts?

Answer:
Google did this, I think they were charging per question asked. It didn't work and they closed. However, I would quite happily pay a nominal monthly fee for this site if your idea for reviewing community moderation was enforced. CM is the biggest problem this site has and is the one thing that drives people away but conversely makes some power crazy users stay.

I wouldn't pay to use Y!A. Also you would still get people who would abuse it.

No. It would kill it. ...But then again they could set up an 'optional' paid version for the half a dozen or so serious questioners and anwerers to use ;) ...And to be honest...I'm not making light of it...because if I had a $5/$3.50 for every PROPER answer I've given I'd be doing OK! The way the system works it is a metaphor for life... "It's mostly full of cr*p, but there are occasional glimmers of hope!"

It may but it would destroy the whole idea of Yahoo Answers which is that it is an open public forum. It return you do have to put up with people who have different interests in life.

You're taking it too seriously. I wont be using it for a fee - it's just a relaxing leisure time thing for me.

yahoo answers is too help people with whatever problems they have in ther life so if theres a 30 year old woman trying to get pregnant she can get help or if theres a 20 year marriage going down the pan its helps and yes if a 11 year old girl thinks that her biggest problem is whether or not shes gunna marry the lead singer of the jonas brothers then she can ask too. people of all ages have differant prblems.....no matter how trivial they are...thats why this site was set up so putting a fee on it restricts who can and cant use it....£3.50 may be nothing to you but its a meal for someone who cant afford it.

So many users would stop using it. Personally i would because i just dont buy things online no matter what the price incase of identity theft or my credit cards being taken but i find yahoo answers a very useful and well sustained site, I personally would be very dissapointed if this happens. Also as a student I don't have even that small amount of cash to spare - and yahoo answers is very helpful on finding formulas or market research for school work.

I understand where your coming from, for example there is 1 particular compulsive liar/ attention seeker who goes by the name flo c or lana c. However we dont have to answer those Q's, we could just ignore them, but sometimes it is good for a laugh. I personally wouldnt use YA again if I had to pay I would just search the web for any answers I was looking for.

I for one wouldn't pay not for a second rate service which we get from Yahoo at the moment. I notice they have had yet another glitch for the last 2 days, no contacts questions being emailed to me.
