Why are thought provoking questions deleted on Answers?
-
I'm just wondering why any question that either provokes a good discussion with over 25 answers gets deleted, or why when regulars post "fun" questions within their sections it gets deleted? I mean does YA not have the capability to separate harassment from other users to real reports of abuse? And just because one question may have had more than one report of abuse - does the number of answers and stars mean nothing to the criteria of deleting a question? Does it ever occur to the people that decide these things that some of the "regular posters" may just have a lot of haters that go above and beyond to make sure a particular poster's questions are deleted? Also, why does YA give "does not meet the questions and answers format" as a reason for a question being deleted? I assume if there is a question mark at the end of a sentence it is a question, no? - and on that note if you get at least one answer that should mean you asked a question to be able to receive an answer. For people that do report certain posters - why? I'm just trying to get a sense into why "fun" is not allowed on the sections for some people.

Answer:
Well.... One would think that if a question was posted in the "Dog Section", for example... And everyone is invited to post their answer/comment...than it does have a purpose...no? Like, if a question gets posted about a certain dog attack that was on the news....it relates directly to dogs...right? Its not chatting...its a discussion on training, genetics, and other input on why such a travesty happened. It is important to dog owners to consider different views in order to prevent such a thing from repeating. I would really like to hear someone's rationale for reporting/deleting such a question.... any time now........ ADD: I would also like to throw this in...if certain people have more pull in deleting / reporting questions with the Y/A moderators....and this is proven...I wonder how that will all play out??? Food for thought ;)

I was having my questions in Polls and Surveys being reported everyday. This I could'nt understand for the life of me..I thought I would get off the dog section and have some fun and it was worse..I now stopped asking light questions as it does'nt seem you can satisfy anyone..

It's especially annoying when you come across an interesting question and you do some research on it and craft an intelligent and useful response. Then when you go to post your answer, the question has been deleted.

i totally agree.. i posted something similar and there was nothing insulting anybody or any slang or anything even mean. and it got deleted after 12 answers b/c somebody reported it. in fact the topic was why the rock and pop were grouped together under music instead of each of the pop and rock having their own group.. was that seriously that bad? i didnt think so. but whatever there will always be some ***hole who reports it for no good reason
The only time I ever report an answer or question is if it is directly insulting someone or if it is a disgusting Troll...lol I think people report the "fun" questions because they are either offended by it for whatever reason or like another poster mentioned, it's considered chatting, but I'm like you, I think if there is a legit question being asked, what's the problem.

I would agree that just putting a question mark at the end of a sentence does not a question make. However, I suspect that most of the questions get deleted because the asker has somehow offended someone on Y/A, and that person follows them and repeatedly reports their questions and answers. My understanding is that most of the process is automated, so no real person sees the question. So I would say "no"....there are not a lot of safeguards against this type of harassment. Any time someone posts ANY question, they are asking for opinions, so I dont see how that could be construed as chatting by any reasonable person.

Yahoo Answers is intended to be a question and answer site for the purpose of a gain of real knowledge. While you don't give any specific examples, it sounds to me like your idea of "fun" might fit under the description of a Chatting Violation. Yahoo does have thousands of e-mail group sites and also chat room sites where your idea of fun might be a perfect fit. Perhaps that might be one option for your needs.

Questions that are thought provoking usually do not have an answer based on facts and are asking opinions which is a violation.:::::::: From the guidelines ( If the answers to your question are facts and data, as opposed to opinions, that is a good question. If you are seeking pure opinion, that is chat.):::::::: -The number of answers and stars a question gets does not stop it from being a violation of the question and answer format. Questions that are chatty will get the most answers more often than not as so many users here did not bother to read the guidelines or think they don't apply to them.. Having a question mark at the end of a sentence does not make it a question. This is not a site about fun or a chat site, it's a questions and answers site and yahoo makes the rules and everyone that signs up agrees to follow them. Go to dizzay.com to see what a site is like without rules, it is not nice.
