Boeing 747 Landing Speed?

  • If a Boeing 747-400 is supposed to be able to land at around 150 knots, why when I am flying on Flight Simulator X does it always seem to fall out of the sky at this this speed? I am flying with my flaps fully extended, yet the plan seems to drop incredibly quickly if I'm flying anything below 175 knots.

  • Answer:

Set your zero fuel weight (empty weight plus payload) to 220.0 metric tonnes and the fuel load to 50.0 tonnes. Your approach reference speed (Vref) should be 149 kts with flaps 30 and 154 kts with flaps 25. If your stick or yoke controller has a trim control, ensure you are in a neutral trim condition once you are fully configured for the approach. Check this by letting go of the controller. If there is little or no pitch change you are trimmed up. Don't reduce thrust in the flare until you are at around 30-40 ft.

Typical landing speeds of 747 vary between 130 and 155 KIAS - Check your landing weight and use Vref table - Do not know anything about FSX table top electronic games -

They typically land in between 130-160 knots, you have to take the environment and weight into consideration as well though.

Too heavy, too shallow a glide slope, too much fuel on board

It depends on the weight and flaps configuration Normally, at a landing weight, it would be 130-160. But in high weight situations (Still have a lot of fuel on board), the landing speed would be 170-180. There's a table for finding these speeds. You said you use Microsoft Flight Simulator X, right? Some 747 publishers, such as one I believe is called "PMDG" publishes a whole performance manual with their 747. You could use that manual to find the appropriate speed.

Check the fuel before you click fly now. I think FSX defaults with full fuel and payload. You could be overweight.

165 knots think about the weight of the plane and flaps
