I want to work for an airline.

Pilots, how does it work if you want to fly for an airline out of your country?

  • lets say that you were an American but wanted to fly for Qantas, or Singapore Airlines. how would that work? would you need a license or qualifications to do that? is it possible?

  • Answer:

Actually it is very possible. I know tons of pilots who fly for airlines like Singapore, Cathay Pacific, and Emirates who originally started to fly in Canada. Typically, you need some qualifications to make you attractive to these companies. Most candidates have several thousand hours, though some start with really low hours under cadet programs. The companies then either arrange the licensing conversion, or you might have to do it yourself to be a qualified candidate. You get a work visa and then you can fly for them. Some have arrangements where you can still live in your own country and jumpseat to your job, but this is typically for more senior pilots...

Other answers

You would need to hold JAA-ATPL certification and you'd either need to become a citizen or hold a permanent work Visa in another country. Bottom line, its possible but not very likely unless you are already qualified to fly and have experience in heavy jet equipment.
