What is the speed needed for flaps of a Boeing 747?

  • What is the maximum speed required to turn on the flaps of Boeing 747 during landing? I know that plane should slow down before turning on the flaps. So at how much knots?

  • Answer:

There are simulator-oriented POHs for the various airliners. Get one. It will answer your questions. Real pilots learn to land smaller planes first. I'm learning in Piper Cherokee 140s, where the school's usual landing procedure is slow to descent power downwind (1700 RPM), 25 degrees flaps, trim for 80 MPH IAS, turn base, turn final, line up on the runway, 40 degrees flaps, trim for 70 MPH IAS, fly the approach (by eye or PAPI), cut the power just before the threshold, cruise attitude, flare, land. If this sounds like a lot of work, it is. If you think I might have been sweating after doing this for an hour yesterday, you're right. My instructor always asks me to call the approach as high or low while we're flying base. Most are now "about right". :-)
