Is it harder for a brown guy to become a pilot?

Should i follow my dream to become an airline pilot?

  • Every since a very young age I have loved flying. Since I was about 12 years old I have known that my dream, my one ultimate goal in life is to become an airline pilot and fly for a living. Now as I approach my 16th birthday, the desire to become a pilot just becomes stronger and stronger every day as the days pass by. I am fortunate enough that I get to travel through the airport once every year. Words just cant describe it for some reason but I just know this is me I feel at home I just get this feeling that I know that this is what I want to do with my life. All I want to do is travel the word. I think it is great that you work irregular hours and knowing that no two days are ever the same. I actually feel sorry for people who sit at their desk day after day – the 9-5 lifestyle, I just could not do that I would literally crack up, that is just not me. I think about it every day, every single day of the year, I just now that this all I want to do and sometimes I cry when I think about it. I know that none of my dreams are waiting for me down here there are waiting for me up there where I belong. I am just so passionate for it. Someone who lets say mite want to be a soccer player he can play soccer every day. I can only get a thrill out of what I want to do once every year. I do countless research on the Internet anytime I can, I know that it is long road in becoming an airline pilot but I know deep down in my heart with my drive to succeed, determination and when I stay focused that I will have no trouble in getting there. I know that you have to invest in a lot of money to do your training – 100k and then try get a job with an airline to sit at the right hand sit and barely get pay up to 20k. I don’t care about people saying do you not see there’s no cost to benefit ratio, and even so if I have to be repaying loans until the day I die (not of course), the one thing I will know that I followed my heart in the career that makes me most happy. Everyone should follow what makes him or her happy because you only get one chance to do so that’s for sure! You never know unless you try that applies to anything Who cares if you fail, you can die knowing that you put your heart and soul into it but unfortunately did not get where you wanted to be or you can die regretting that you did not follow your dream. For example, someone I know whom now has one year of college done, regrets not following his dream to become a pilot. He said to me to never let go, never give up, “and go for it do us all proud for the people that did not follow their dreams”. The Aer Lingus Cadetship Programme, which is now after been started up again I think has allot to offer, as they provide your trying for you where they take you from zero experience to they stage where they give you a job as a First Officer with them flying their short haul routes. Also partly sponsor some of your course. If anyone could give me his or her views and opinions on it that would be great because I may consider applying for that when I have my leaving cert completed in 2 years time. Details of this can be found at: www.aerlingus.com/pilot. Would I be better after my leaving cert to go to University and obtain a degree of some sort, so that I could maybe fall back on that should I may not succeed. Also does anyone have any experience with The Pilot Training College of Ireland in Waterford? After me writing all about this and myself do I sound crazy or am I guy that is just passionate about succeeding in the aviation Industry, should I follow my dreams, what do you think? I am ever so grateful for anyone that comment back on this I appreciate it, so much also if any pilots could comment would be brilliant

  • Answer:

Commerical pilots are hired out of the military, not out of some school.

do you want to be a pilot? You know how bad the industry I assume and how even worse it is at the regionals and if you are willing to live off that little money just to fly an airliner that yes. Ask your family, I don't personally know you and therefore, if I don't know the person I don't feel comfortable telling them that they shouldn't or that they should. My only advice: Follow your dreams, but always have a plan B (I just made that up and it sounds good to me lol). Some more advice if you choose to become one: "If you fail to plan then plan to fail".

I am just a kid, but I know how fun it is to fly! If you know that you do really want this and even sometimes the dangers of being a pilot, you know the risks, and how much work it is and you still want to put everything you can offer into it and live your dream of being a pilot and traveling the world then go for it! There are jobs that you just want to quit and forget, like those office computer "jobs" that you sit there for hours just staring at a lighted up screen your just going to regret everything, because then it might not be a time where you can get a different one. So don't wait and follow your dream of flying through the skies and seeing place some people will never see. If you are really sure go for it and go to that pilot programme you talked about and live your dream. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!!! :)

I dont think id bother.. Becoming a pilot for me.. Although not a regret cos I do like it.. But it is a bit disappointing when you finish.. Life as a pilot has its ups and downs.. Also considering a career change

Talk to some professional pilots (a lot of them) and learn what it is really like. Find out how many of them really get to travel the world. For those that do, ask them if traveling the world is all that fantastic. Airports and airport hotels and crew shuttles are pretty much the same everywhere and that's about 95% of what you'll see if you become an international airline pilot. Right now you are love with your dream and have stars in your eyes, you are not in love with a flying career because you know next to nothing about it. Expectations and reality are rarely equivalent. This is not to say you shouldn't go for it, only that you need to know exactly what you're getting yourself into. Emotional decisions are rarely good decisions.

Try using that little key near your right pinky. It usually has the words 'Enter' or 'Return' on it. 'the 9-5 lifestyle, I just could not do that ...' 'I cry when I think about ...' Every single current and former airline pilot has said those same things. Even us grumpy ex-airline pilots who say that this career sucks and a 'normal job' is so much better... we all felt the same way you did. You may be thinking "but I'm different" and "I really know what I'm talking about". Yeah, we said those same things too. We all couldn't imagine doing anything in life other than flying airplanes until we actually got a job doing it. Listen, this career sucks. Period. Have a backup career. You may think that a 9-5 office jobs sucks now but that will change when you have a wife and kids. I'm not trying to talk you out of flying airplanes for a living. I'm just trying to get you to avoid making the same mistakes that countless of other airline pilots made and that's shoe-horning themselves into just this one career with no way out. If you don't believe us, then talk to a professional pilot (who is older and has been in the business for many years). Rarely will you meet one who will disagree with what we are saying here.
