What's the process of becoming a pilot?

Is this the correct process for becoming a commercial airline pilot?

  • I KNOW IT HAS BEEN ASKED. But I am just verifying that I have this correct. This is the process?: 1. Private Pilot License 2. Airline Transport Pilot License (ATP or ATPL) --Does it matter weather it is an ATP or an ATPL? 3. Instrument Ratings (maybe for a large airplane ie boeing) 4. Build flight time 5. Get hired Is this correct? No mean or trolling answer please!

  • Answer:

The following are the two most common paths to attaining your FAA certificates to become a commercial airline pilot (assuming that we are referring to the system in the United States): - "Path 1" (Most Efficient) - Private Pilot Single-Engine Certificate - Private Pilot Multi-Engine Add-On Certificate - Instrument Pilot Certificate (Multi-Engine: Reciprocated to Single-Engine Instrument Privileges) - [Time Building for the Commercial Pilot Certificates] - Commercial Pilot Multi-Engine Certificate - Commercial Pilot Single-Engine Certificate - Flight Instructor Certificates (i.e. CFI, CFII, MEI): Can be done in no particular order; though most begin with the CFI. - The ATP requires 1500 hours of total time; most pilots acquire this from flight instructing or in 121 and/or 135 operations. - "Path 2" - Private Pilot Single-Engine Certificate - Instrument Pilot Certificate (Single-Engine) - [Time Building for the Commercial Pilot Certificates] - Commercial Pilot Single-Engine Certificate - Commercial Multi-Engine Add-On Certificate - Instrument Pilot Certificate (Multi-Engine) - Flight Instructor Certificates (i.e. CFI, CFII, MEI): Can be done in no particular order; though most begin with the CFI. - The ATP requires 1500 hours of total time; most pilots acquire this from flight instructing or in 121 and/or 135 operations. I added the completion of multi-engine certificates, because virtually all air carriers require the completion of multi-engine certificates. Also, most civilian airline pilots flight instruct prior to their employment.
