What is the fastest airplane?

What is the fastest "high wing" propeller airplane?

  • Does Cessna make the fastest high-wing propeller (light aircraft) plane, or is there others available. I am interested in one that will cruse at close to 200 knots, but capable of taking off and landing on short, soft landing strips.

    I would have to guess the Bombardier Q400... it has a max cruise speed of 340 kts... thats FAST for a prop...

A DeHavilland dh-98 Mosquito is as much a high wing plane as a B26 and is about 130mph faster. A Dash-8 Q400 is still faster at 425mph. Now is a Tupolev Tu-95 Bear high wing or not? The top of the wing is certainly near the top of the body. Those are good for 500kts or 575mph.

Since you're talking about a practical plane to buy... While certainly not the fastest, AeroComp makes several kit aircraft the can reach 200+ knots. They are high-wing, taildraggers often equipped with Walter turboprop engines.

Not real sure on this one....Cessna doesn't make it though...The 210 isnt very fast...and the 206 and 208 are just work horses....I would research the Extra 400...I dont think it ever "kicked off" but I think it was pretty fast... Jonathan S ATP-LRJET,HS-125 CFI/AGI

Try a Cessna 337. While it only does about 150 knots it is very good on rough strips (especially if you have a STOL kit installed). You can pick one up for a fraction of the price of a 210 (which goes about the same speed).

High wing, light aircraft, I would say the Extra 500. It can do 226 KTAS at altitude, and you can operate out of a 2500 ft. strip with room to spare.
