-
Hey everyone next thursday im going to be flying for my first time and im scared as hell. I hate heights as it is and begin so high up like that isn't going to help. I just wanted to know what some good things to do on a plane to get my mind off knowing im way up in the air. Im also very scared about the plane crashing and what are the odds of that happening or getting hijacked. you just hear about bad stuff all the time. what is worst the take off or landing im going to be flying out of Toronto Ontario to Atlanta then on to Myrtle Beach

Answer:
Flight. It is the fastest and most efficient form of transport in the world. It has been around for 107 years, and has been getting people to their destinations safely. Airlines have been around since November 16, 1909. Air transport is the safest form of transportation. These complicated machines from a Cessna 172 to a Boeing 747 are designed precisely to function in almost all conditions. My father is an airline pilot, for Delta, for almost 33 years, and has 23,000 flight hours. He has never crashed, or damaged a plane in the slightest bit (okay, he nicked our 2001 Olds Bravada putting our Beech Baron into the hangar, but it hurt the window seal more than the wing). Pilots are trained extremely well, to deal with almost any condition. They can maneuver an aircraft with a lost engine, or even with two lost, and can fly on the clearest of days, or darkest, cloudiest of nights. Air transport accidents are rare, but thought to be common because in the rare event in which one occurs, it is publicized to the masses. On statistic there is a car crash every 15 seconds, although not always fatal, you have more of a chance of being in one. 1 out of everyt 2 million aircraft flights result in accident, though are not always fatal (many more General aviation) and airlines have even less. Airlines make money by being the safest, quickest and most effecient form of travel, so don't be afraid, be afraid of going to Toronto airport, not flying from it.

Don't worry. Everyone has fears the first time they do things. I was the same way. I hate hights yet I love to fly. Just think about wherever it is your flying to and what you are doing there. Then enjoy any compliments of the airline, because food helps settle nerves. If you can, lie back and relax and take a nap. If you can't just rest assured the pilots have plenty of training to make that plane get where it is going safely. Enjoy flying! I Do!
First thing you should know is that the chance of a plane crashing is practically zero. An average of roughly 42,000 people die a year in car crashes, vs. roughly 120 people in plane crashes. It's significantly more dangerous to get in a car than in a plane. Flying is one of the safest modes of transportation there is. If heights bother you, try to avoid a window seat. If you do end up with one, there will be a shutter you can draw over the window so you don't have to see anything. Having flown many times, I can tell you that the only difference you'll notice in height is that your ears will pop once you go high enough. (chewing gum can help prevent that from happening, it relieves pressure in the inner ear). As for the concern with hijacking, there have not been any aircraft hijackings since 9/11, and security has been vastly improved since then. Every single attempt since then has been thwarted by security. The people in charge of security are very competent, and you can trust them to take care of any potential threats, although there will almost certainly be none. My only other advice is to bring a book or something to do while you're on the plane. Keep yourself distracted, and try to enjoy your flight.

well i fly everyday i was a student pilot 2 months ago i see lot of guys doing stupid things in the flying school n no one crashes or nothing happens i see almost 500 aircrafts every hour landing near my flying school so nothing matters even we who started flying from 6 months do this better the airline pilots are lot more experienced than us n they has many equipments to be safe so don worry just enjoy the ride see a movie or just sleep u wont even feel u r flying
Bring reading material or some mp3 music. As far as crashing or hijacking...statistically speaking, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning than being in a crash or being hijacked. But, if you see a guy trying to set his underwear on fire...GET HIM!!! ;)

If you die on this trip, it will likely be on the drive to/from the airport, not in the plane. Sit by the window, and the wonderful view will likely distract you from worry. Planes are maintained to extreme safety standards and they all have multiple backup systems in case one part fails. Flying is not natural and the human body naturally fears the sensations involved with being so high up and not in control of the vehicle. Accept this. With a few flights this fear will wear off and you may actually start looking forward to the amazing experience of travelling over the earth at 500mph above the weather, where its always sunny (or starry). Bon Voyage!

Don't look over the side toward the ground. It's nearly 8 miles to the dirt and falling that far will certainly kill you. Not only that, but you will have plenty of time to think about your demise. Odds of being hijacked or crashing are pretty low. Try to avoid self-fulfilling prophseies. Bon chance!

Just trust the pilots they know what they are doing unless they are taliban, jk, but the pilots have over 5,000 flying hours and watch a movie, read, or sleep its easy to do the sound of the engines is relaxing and be happy if you not on an Airbus!!
As dangerous as flying is, it is far more dangerous to drive in a car. 3000 people in Canada lost their lives in car crashes last year.

I don't know if you are 21 yrs or older but have a drink at the airport 30 mins before your flight and relax also vision yourself at your destination. What I did was tell the gate attendant that it was my 1st time flying and they introduced me to the pilot and co pilot and the flight attendants were extra comforting during the flight it made me feel at ease. Also take some distractions like a crossword puzzle, IPod, magazines, etc. Look the things that you fear are all trumped up by the federal govt and the media the chances of any of that crap happening is 0 to none good luck and have fun.
