Have you flown an ILS approach inverted? If you did, how was it?

I have an Elite PI-135 flight simulator that includes yoke, throttles, radio stack, and rudder pedals; if you're not familiar with it, go to www.flyELITE.com to see it. This sim is FAA approved for logging instrument time. A few days ago, I shot an ILS approach in low visibility, in a B 58 Baron, all the way down to the runway, inverted, flying 10 feet over the runway. The approach was executed well, with the needles on the HSI centered, gear extended, and flaps set to approach. I must say, it was fun to do; I plan to shoot it to minimums next time. I have discovered, by doing this unusual approach, it can help enhance instrument scanning and interpretation skills. Of course, I wouldn't attempt this in a real airplane, and no... I could not log this flight. If you haven't tried it, experiment. When you do, do it on a FAA approved sim, so you'll experience it with true and accurate flight dynamics.

Answer:
I did it in a Pitts S2A special years ago, but of course, this aircraft is made for inverted flight with a symetrical aerofoil and inverted tanks, weird feeling but lots of fun, didn't quite get to 10 feet though, just went to MDA and flew level. Odd thing is that you seem more bothered about the blood flowing to your head and keeping the needles centred, cos it takes intense concentration. I think it's one of those things I'm glad to have tried but won't try it again, just like bungee jumping....

I've done this as well. In a Frasca flight training device (FTD) I flew an ILS into Seattle all the way to minimums in full IMC. Once I "broke out" of the muck, I flew a low pass down the runway. Gives you a greater respect for the airshow pilots!

I do ILS's they are the best.. what makes IMC flying so challenging is the constant eye movement betwenn the six pack. - AH - Art Horizon, being mother.. in your scan always come back to mother. so. Bascially AH - DG, AH - Airspeed , AH Altimeter - AH - Turn slip indicator - AH - VSI , when shooting an ILS, add AH - Needles . Keep a strong scan going, any deviation always comeback with small corrections especially inside the FAF. takes practice , but always rewarding

By inverted, do you mean upside down? No, I haven't ever done that. It's definitely not safe, and while I can't think of any rule that it would break, 91.13 is a popular one for the FAA.
