Finding a job with a commercial company at the moment might be difficult. If you are looking at the apprentice level, it is even more difficult. If you are not a Canadian citizen, that might be one of your problems when you apply for positions within Canada. If you are looking for a job, one option is to call the appropriate union. Sometimes they know of positions that need to be filled. Another suggestion that I can make is to consider being self-employed. I have worked for large corporations as an employee. I have also worked for them on a contract basis. I am not an AME but I have a lot of licenses and permits for several different professions, industrial mechanics, robotics technician, automotive technician, educator, and a number of other things that I have built up over the years, and I am usually overqualified for whatever I am applying for. I do quite well when I apply for a job. I usually insist on short term contracts with an option so they can be extended, so that I can move on to other things when I want to. I do not want to spend my life working at the same thing for years on end. If you have the correct papers as a qualified AME, you should be able to do well too. I have also worked independently with my own business. Actually, being self-employed is what I prefer, rather than being an employee. You can set up your own business and advertise to local private or commercial aviators, for example call COPA and see if you can advertise there. Leave your business cards beside bank machines and beside the coffee pots in small airport lounges. After a few people call you with problems, they will tell their friends, and the ball starts rolling. You can set up as a sole proprietorship, or you can incorporate, which is more expensive and more complex to set up, but is the better option if you want to operate your own business. The problem is, if you want to be an employee, and you are incorporated, the unions and employers will not accept you. They will only engage individuals as employees, not corporations. One of the school boards that I worked for got quite excited when I suggested that I was going to incorporate. So did the union. I guess I was the first teacher that had considered it, and they sicced their lawyers on me. So, if you want your own business, and you want the option of working for someone else, the sole proprietorship is the correct option. If you are going to operate your own company, then incorporate. The business laws vary from province to province, so consult with a lawyer before you do anything like that. Also, be sure, either way, if you are self-employed, that you have adequate insurance. Good luck in your new career.

In addition to the previous suggestions, I can further that the entire aviation industry is built around your personal networking skills. While it is possible to find a job without knowing anyone at the company you apply for, having at least one internal reference will immediately single out your resume for further consideration. I suggest going to career fairs, seminars and lectures in the aviation/aerospace community to try to meet current employees at these corporations to get your name out there and meet some important people. I know pilots who got their jobs simply because they bumped into the CEO of an airline or company on the airport ramp and had an engaging conversation. Also, keep that driving record clear as glass because your employers in aviation will be scrutinizing it to see how well you follow the rules.
