What is the best way to become an airline pilot?
-
Hi, I'm a 15 year old boy in Australia. My life long dream is to become an airline pilot, but I don't know the best way to become one. I know some other people who want to become pilots, but in the air force. Should I join the air force and become a transport plane pilot and do my training there, then join an airline when I can, or, go to flight school, get my PPL and then CPL and do 1000 hours flight time? P.S, do you need to get a degree in uni like a physics degree or a maths degree to become a pilot? THANKS HEAPS, I HAVE NO PILOTS TO TALK TO!!!!!

Answer:
1. Finish College - From an airline point of view, if you're an undergrad, you won't be considered. Nowadays, airlines require their pilot applicants to be college graduates. More importantly, you should realize that the "filtering" process towards becoming an airline pilot is long, harsh, and gruelling. Not all of those who "dream" of becoming a pilot, make it. Even fewer actually become airline pilots. If you become one of those who do not "make it", a college degree (prefereably a non-aviation related course), ensures that you have a "fall-back" and that your life doesn't get stuck in a rut. This is not meant to discourage anyone, it's just a reality that you have to come to terms with. I mentioned that you should preferably have a non-aviation related course. This is because the aviation industry itself is a volatile one. Companies (not necessarily airlines) come and go. Having knowledge of a different field, again, offer you more options regarding career paths.

Hi coming from Australia and growing up and doing all my flying training there and kicking off my career there I know a fair bit about it. I'm not really familiar with the Military route as I didn't go that way and didn't really interest me being in the military.. Taking the civil route. I guess it all starts with your medical, however it is not required I highly recommend it, If you can't become a pilot it is best to know now, rather than later after you have spent 10000's of $$$$.. Next is to start flying lessons Don't fall into the hype of universities conducting flying training, airlines don't care.. All they care about is experience and hours.. any CASA approved flying school is fine.. A university degree is not really required to fly for airlines in Australia.. Airlines such as Virgin don't need one.. QANTAS however require a VCE/HSC... But I doubt they will even be an airline when your ready to apply :( I would complete year 12, then start flying straight after.... Actual experience in the industry is much more valuable than any aviation uni degree out there.. good luck.. [email protected]
