Which one is in more high demand helicopter pilots or airplane pilots?
-
The economy sucks and I am thinking of a career change and thought about becoming a pilot but I don't know which too choose. I know the helicopter license is more expensive but that is ok if I can get a good job.

Answer:
Same same - If there are 50 pilot openings, 25 are fixed wing, 25 are rotary - For fixed wing, finding a job with CPL and 250 hrs is very difficult - For rotary pilot, finding a job with less than 1,000 hrs is about impossible - Helicopter...? Only solution = Army - Mention to "Misc" that AA just furloughing 500 F/O 737 pilots - They just declared Chapter 11 - And American Eagle will follow - United has some 800 pilots on furlough presently - Delta unknown - They have pilots on furlough - Number...? His "me" as source does not worth 5 cents - There are 7,500+ qualified pilots with ATP in USA now - all unemployed - How can you start training today and beat them with CPL and 250 hrs...? - It will take at least 15 years for anyone starting training now to get to airlines - .

"The industry is growing and with the Vietnam War pilots retiring, now is the best time!" I heave heard this nonsense so much in the helicopter industry too, and you should not believe a word of it. The only people saying this are flight schools that just want your money. The reality is that there are countless pilots out there looking for work, both helicopter pilots and airplane pilots, and finding work is a terrible challenge for rookies even in the best of times. The thing to understand is that it will take years of struggle to "get a good job" for either helicopters or airplanes. Pilot certification alone is inadequate for the good jobs. Those require experience, so paying for a "license" is just the very first step on a long, costly journey. It can take years of begging for work and making less than minimum wage before you get enough flight hours to make a decent living. Serving in the military is often touted as a superior path because it offers exceptional training and experience without the financial burdens. But it too requires years, and it is very competitive. There is no guarantee that you will be chosen for pilot training. So regardless, there is no easy way. And given that both industries present major hurdles for new pilots, whatever differences there are in the markets at any given time is mostly a moot point and should not be the primary factor in your decision. The real question in choosing between the two is which one you will enjoy more, because you will need to love it in order to find the motivation to overcome the obstacles on the path to a decent career. Good luck!
