How can I get an interview with a Pilot?

Experiences that would help me become a RAF pilot?

  • Hey everyone. I am 16 years old and in my last year of school (Year 11) and i am currently sitting my GCSE's. I am predicted to pass all of them easily. However more to the point, i have already contacted the RAF and i have already been to a interview about it in Guildford (Nearist one to me). I understand that qualifications play a part in becoming a pilot. But i am aware that that it is a very competitive job, and have heard only 1 in 10,000 become a RAF pilot. So therefor i have been told that my experiences play a big part in being accepted. I am also going to try and get sponsored to go into sixth form. I have a few good experiences already, such as traveling to Timbuctoe with a group of mates on our own with no tour traveling over 3000km from where we picked up our vehicle and map reading ourselfs there; which i played a big part in. And i have also done rock climbing up certain mountains such as Snowdon, in Wales. At the moment i am applying to join the ATC (Air Cadets) to higher my chances of getting in. However, is there anything that anyone could recommend for me to do to high my chances of standing out from the rest? I am up for anything, and it is my dream to become a Pilot in the RAF. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Nic Hawkins

You seem to be doing all the right things. Work hard at school and get decent A level grades. In the ATC it is possible to learn to fly both gliders and powered aircraft, but the opportunities are rather limited - these would certainly show that you had the appropriate aptitude. But be yourself, don't try to fit into a theoretical template of what you think the RAF will want - they are pretty experienced at spotting the sort of people they need. Oh, and good luck!

it sounds as though you are getting good experience, I think the RAF would be delighted to receive your application the things which might count someone out are ones they can't do anything about, eg slight colour-blindness or other eyesight problems. I guess their personality test will help them to select people who are fit, composed, calm and perhaps a bit boring. A creative extrovert, however intelligent, however keen, possibly will not be what they want in that job. If you decide on a different career you can carry on flying your own aircraft

Stay on at school, do A levels then go to University and get a degree then you will at least be in the running. To be a modern fast jet pilot you need to be educated to degree level.

you realise you'll get to sent to countries that Britain is illegally occupying and you will be ordered to drop bombs on civilian areas, killing innocent adults and children,.... right?

Pass the GCSEs, do the A levels (Maths, physics and geography will help a lot for piloting) then go to the RAF! If you want to go to uni, they'll give you a bursary at the same time you can fly fast jets or fixed wing aircraft or whatever for them!
