Air Traffic Control?

Getting Hired: FAA Air Traffic Control?

  • When I graduate high school I plan on enlisting in the Air Force as an air traffic controller. When I'm eligible to crosstrain into Combat Control I will, or I'll re-enlist with CCT in my contract. USAF ATCs have all the qualifications for the FAA and they get 52 consecutive weeks of tower experience. USAF CCTs have all the qualifications for the FAA but they do air traffic control missions on the ground in hostile areas. They don't get tower experience though. My question is do you think I would get hired to a large airport with all the qualifications and tower experience, but I haven't been in the tower for 4 years (but still certified and still in the air traffic control field). From 18-22 I would be an ATC. From 22-26 I would be a CCT so the age cutoff doesn't matter. I will also try to earn an associates degree during that 8 years in the AF to look better for the workforce. Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

Hmm, I would advise a few things. Ask this in the military section, not here. Also, if I were you, I'd go straight to the FAA. Better pay, good benefits. Lastly, talk to current USAF controllers if you can. The job isn't always what it seems. Lots of non-controller crap you have to do.
