Best route to become an airline pilot?
-
HI. I have read thousands of posts on internet, cause I really want to become an pilot. But a while ago I read an interesting article saying that the military route is 1000 times better. This guy that posted it said that you get more hours and you don't have to pay that much. And here is my first question. Do those hours from military training count the same as the hours from college/ private training? Don't they use another kind of planes in military? Second question. What if I have enough hours, I am experienced enough but I do not have a college degree. Would they hire me to me to the major airlines? Thanks for help, I would really appreciate your help.

Answer:
The military route may be "1000 times better" for those who actually qualify and are selected to go that way, but it's also 1000 times harder to get into. Most people who recommend a military option for becoming a civilian airline pilot have NO IDEA of what they are talking about. You don't have to pay ANYTHING to get pilot training in the military, BUT you do need to have a four-year college degree and be commissioned as an Officer in the military BEFORE you would be considered for military flight training. There's also the minor matter of the 8-10 year commitment to military service that goes along with most pilot training programs. If you really want to become an airline pilot WITHOUT the possibility of being shot at every time you fly, FORGET the military and figure out a way to get your flight training on your own.

Military experience includes not only some of the best training available, pilots get to fly highly sophisticated jet or turboprop aircraft that have far more in common with airliners than the aircraft you are trained with in the civilian world. Hour-for-hour, military pilots have more desirable experience up to a point. In the USA, something like sixty percent of major airline pilots are ex-military. They have the edge in almost every way. Also, in the USA, you have a very low chance of getting an airline pilot job without a college degree. Is it possible without one? Yes. it statistically likely? No.

Military training is 1000 times harder to get into, so airlines already know you're 1000 times better than the rest of the lot. You will be noticed easily, airlines tend to snatch up airforce pilots like hotcakes (does that make sense?) but yes. If you make it into the military, it's only to your benefit - you will get to fly aircraft that civvie pilots could only dream of.

The best way is to do college with AF ROTC - Unfortunately it was easier in the old days... the 1960s - But I got a red carpet for hiring by airlines - No, you do not have to pay a penny for education and training - And you get a million dollar training flying jets... Learning in a C-172 is not exactly the right way to the cockpit of a 737 - I was KC-135 tanker pilot in the USAFR - That gave me a FAA 707 type rating when I became civilian - Interview with the airline was... "You are Air Force, l see...?" - I said "yes sir, tankers..." - that is all they asked - All they said - "welcome to Pan Am, can you make the class next month...?" - .
