Can someone with anger management problems actually be a commercial air pilot?
-
There is this guy at a grocery store I work at that wants to be a pilot, actually says he WILL be a pilot, like he is that sure of himself....yet he has the worst temper I've ever seen in my life. He can't deal with people at all, and gets mad over the most stupid little things..so I'm wondering if he could actually be a pilot that flies people from place to place, because man if he did become one I'd be scared for those people flying on his plane....

Answer:
Unfortunately, yes, they can become airline pilots, although such people are very ill-suited to the job. There are no specific tests for these types of personality traits, nor are there any specific requirements from an aviation medical standpoint. So they can certainly slip through the cracks. This is true for many types of personality issues, not just anger issues.

NO! HELL NO....YOU DUMB PIECE OF....ARGHHH! Some nerve buddy. sigh....sorry about that, it acts up every now and then. Seriously, if his anger problem was serious enough to be hazardous to flying, they'll find that out during his flight training. If he just hates people, he'll at least have to behave himself in an interview, and around other pilots. Angry outbursts on the job...anywhere...can get you fired.

I would recommend him to only fly in a single pilot operation - And bark his bad mood with an ATC controller on the radio - No crew type pilot team... what if he gets an argument with his captain...? Pilots are preferably people with low blood pressure and tempers - .

As long has he doesn't have a criminal record on file as a result of his anger, it shouldn't keep him from being a pilot. Cut the guy some slack; he might be Irish and I know how that is.

He can likely become a private pilot, and as long as he can keep a decent record with his constituants in the aviation industry, he will also get his commercial. However, if it is noted somewhere along the way he may be a danger to the people and passengers on the airline, even if he were to make it as a commercial pilot, he may lose his ticket (pilots license) imediately at some point if there is any unusual anger. Anger or being disgruntled is an acceptable practice if it is in good character or used to make a point that is serious (ie,. the airline is telling the pilot the plane is safe when he knows it isn't) or the pilot shooting or stabbing a terrorist in anger to protect the passengers, etc. If his anger is dangerous to the point as you state in your question, he's not going to make it. But if he has justified anger, that is normal and acceptable that's a differant question. Here's food for thought: what if the pilot was a weany and won't tell the airline the airplane is not safe? (this has happened) I would prefer a pilot that would confront the airline and tell them "This F'n airplane is not safe and I WON'T FLY IT and risk the lives of MY PASSENGERS"! At that point, GOD BLESS THE MAD PILOT RIGHT? HELLO! Their is a place for anger in the proper situation.

There is no specific barrier but there are a lot of hoops to go through to become a commercial pilot (and there is a *lot* of competition). The likelihood of that particular person becoming a pilot is smaller than he probably thinks, especially because recommendations play into the process, formally and informally, at several levels.
Legally and medically.. Probably yes.. Practically.. Noo Being a pilot can be pretty stressful and if you have anger management problems your unlikely to get far.. I was a flight instructor and if my students reacted like this, I would not fly with them.. also in the airline environment, Pilots are generally pretty easy going nice and can tolerate a lot of stress.. Because you wil be flying with lots of different types of personalities.. When airlines hire new pilots the question is often asked.... Can I sit with this person for a long period of time and not get annoyed?
