What's it like to be a flight attendant?

Question about Flight Attendant Pay Logic?

  • Just a thought... At most companies (outside airlines for a moment), the company will offer pay raises over the course of many years. I would assume the logic behind this is that the longer a person has worked for a company, the more experienced they are, the more knowledgeable they are, and therefore the more valuable they are to the company. Therefore, pay raises make sense to want to keep the employee. Would this work in reverse for flight attendants? A young, excitable, cheerful flight attendant has lots of energy, and is still excited about travelling the world and serving people on the plane. But as time goes on, the flight attendant gets older (don't burn me on this one, but probably gets less pretty/handsome as time goes on), has less energy, is bored by travel, and probably fed up handling angry passengers. So by this logic, the flight attendant is becoming less and less valuable to the company. Yet, a senior flight attendant will be higher paid and have better scheduling despite being less valuable to the company. Isn't this sort of the reverse of our normal capitalistic business schematic?

  • Answer:

A flight attendants job is not to look pretty and ask "Chicken or Beef". A flight attendants job is passenger SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY. A 40 year old flight attendant will ensure that all passengers react safely in an emergency, any company wont have the same confidence in a new pretty fresh faced hostie. Pay will be based on experience and not looks. I would rather have a flight attendant with 20 years experience look after me than one with 2 years experience.

Rather sexist view of attendants. Even when you look at it through this perverted lens, your argument isn't logically sound. Even if attendants were used only as eye candy ( which is an ignorantly degrading premise), who says younger is better? What makes you believe that older attendants can't provide better service, isn't more dedicated, has less energy or has less patience. My experience in life supports the opposite of that. Regardless, you should be thankful we operate in a society that affords us a legal system that demands blindness when considering qualities such as age or looks.

so you reckon 20 year old new flight attendants could have evacuated every1 off US airways 1459 in time, just like the 20 years of experience 40-50 year old flight attendants did? your logic is screwed. stick flying the plane and dont get involved with the managerial side of airlines.
