• Hello, I am 17 years old, and in Grade.12 ... I'm still confused about what I want to exactly do in the future... But I do have Pilot on my mind. What does it take to basically become a Pilot for like Air Canada? ... Schooling, anything possible would help! Thanks :)

  First, keep up the good marks in whatever you are doing. Second, scrape together ten grand to do a private pilots license. Third, apply to Confed, Sault, or Seneca. They are one of the few places in the world outside of the military that subsidize flight training. Then it is nominally about a ten year trek to the majors, working in one of the most dangerous and low paying jobs there are. Lots of guys go to NWO, MB, or NT for a dock or ramp job in hopes of getting a seat. Others stick it out in Southern Ontario (Barrie is still south) for jumper dumper or instructor jobs. After that it is medevacs, charters, regionals, and then maybe a major (Air Canada or West Jet) or something just short of that (Porter, Jazz, Transat). Nothing pays really well until you get a couple years into a 705 (airline) First Officer job. Getting there working for 702/703/704 companies means low pay, bad schedule, and moving around a lot. This is where having subsidized training vs paying for it is better. The other route is to try and get into the RCAF. Lots of hoops to jump through, you owe them a commitment whether you pass training or not, and you are an officer first, pilot second. Most RCAF pilots only fly about 300 hours a year (less than half of what a full time pilot flies). You need a university degree to be a Direct Entry Officer and speak fluent French and English to fly for the RCAF.
