Is boom operator a good job?

Which job is better Boom operator or loadmaster?

  • I choose to go into the air force as an boom operator, over going in as an loadmaster, did i make the right decisison? I don't really have an preference i won't to travel alot and make a lot of money (just being honest).

    Both are very good jobs, if you can get them. Enlisted aircrew is a prestigious job. As a Boomer you will be the defacto loadmaster as well. You spend very little time actually refueling. You will be respondsible for anything and anyone in the cargo compartment. I have worked elbow to elbow with both jobs. Like any job it is what you make it, Both will travel a lot, one you are fully qualified. You will be living out of a suitcase. To the above answer, Yes it is dangerous. All aircrew positions are, that is why they are volunteer postions. You get paid by rank and service length, plus flight pay. There has not been a tanker lost to a mid air collision, during refueling in over 25 years.

I'd rather be loadmaster if given a choice. I find boomer to be rather lonely. You're alone in the very back end. As loadmaster, you get to talk to more people (generally) and yes, as loadmaster, it is easier to get civilian job than a boomer.

I think being a boomer would be funner but more dangerous (tankers and tankees do collide on rare occasion, usually with fatal results if it happens, but it's pretty rare). A loadmaster might be able to transfer that knowledge to civilian life, in case the thought would appeal to you.
