How does Per Diem work?

Aircraft sheet metal pay and per diem for sheetmetal work?

  • Aircraft sheet metal workers, I'm told the pay starts at 24 per hour. But a per diem is factored in which ends up giving you an actual 7.45 an hour taxable. The recruiter tells me guys who have been doing sheet metal for 20+ years are only making 24 per hour also. Why would I be told that when the average pay is around 35 per hour according to yahoo?

  • Answer:

Perhaps someone who's been doing the job for 20 years, and is working in a union shop could see $35 per hour, but don't expect to see that on your first day on the job.

Ask the question again when you have the qualifications. By then you'll know. Don't try to figure what your g0ing to do by the pay. You still have to qualify.

I worked in aircraft maintenance for 50 years. I worked general aviation, and spent 40 years working for 4 different airlines. I'll admit I retired 15 years ago, but friends assure me the pay hasn't really increased very much. Most sheet metal men were A&Ps. At top pay, with license premium and working as a lead technician I never made much over $20 hr straight time. I worked for the best paying airlines too. Starting pay is closer to $12.50 in the US. Some offshore jobs do pay well. Good luck. It's a difficult and rewarding career.
