Where on the leaf is the stomata and what is it's function?

Leaf types and stomata?

  • which types of leaves would have few stomata on their upper surface? and which leaf types would have a large number of stomata on their lower leaf surface? and why? thanx for help!

  • Answer:

Most plants contain their stomata on the lower surface of the leaf. The area under the leaf has less sunlight exposure and fewer cells with chlorophyll. It is a natural area for these openings that allow gasses into and out of the blade. Plants that are found in a water environment like pond lilys have their stomata on the upper surface. This will allow the gasses to enter and leave without having to go through the water found below the leaves. Gasses diffuse quicker in air than in water.

Other answers

As stomata control the water passing from the leaf, they will be found in greater numbers in tropical plants where there are humid conditions. In conditions where water conservation is important, there will be less stomata and be found in a grater ratio on the bottom of the leave. Tthe desert would be such an area . http://sps.k12.ar.us/massengale/leaf_stomata_lab.htm
