Trees found in Alabama?

How far north can palm trees be found?

  • I've always wondered the geographic extent of palm trees. I know that they CAN be grown far north if taken extra care of, but I mean how far north are they found in abundance? I know that they are there on the North Carolina shore, and as far north as Eureka, California on the west coast, but they can't grow at that same latitude across the USA. What is the northern extent of palm trees in other states? Can they be grown in: Southern Arkansas, Atlanta, Birmingham, Austin, Dallas, New Mexico, or in Oregon?? How about in other parts of the world?

  • Answer:

their are a few "cold tollerant palms" whcih can handle plenty of cold. Virginia beach is loaded with palms, and coastaly seattle and oregon is too. Vancouver even has a few. None of these are "tropical though such as coconuts, but are palm trees no less, and look like a palm tree too". Atlanta has a few around, but they arent widely planted yet. Arkansas doesnt have many planted, but their are also a few around. If you look hard enough you will see some in the NYC area and along cape cod. The brooklyn botanical garden has a windmill palm. The DC aboretorium has a needle palm that is quite large and unprotected. England has a few palms around because their winters are moderate even though their summers are usaually cool as well. thats the farthest north you will find them outside year round. The most cold tolerant palm is the needle palm and can handle 0F once established. Pindo palms and windmill palms can survive 10F without a problem when establihed as well. their are quite a few others. good luck.

It depends what you consider to be a "palm tree." Most people only consider Coconut Palms or Date Palms palm trees. Some people consider yucca plants and bananas to be palm trees. However, neither yuccas nor bananas are palms and there are many more species of palms than Coconuts and Dates. There are palm trees with fan shaped leaves (people often mistake these for yuccas) ranging in height from short and bush-like to towering and those with feather shaped leaves (like the Coconut) which are more associated with the tropics. True palm species can grow as far from the equator as the British Isles in Europe, British Columbia on the North American west coast, Connecticut on the North American east coast, and Korea on the east coast of East Asia. Most palms in far northern regions are fan-type palms and often do not grow to more than eight to ten feet tall. Some hardy species that can survive in these locations include Sabal minor, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Trachycarpus fortunei, and Chamerops humulis.
