Java moss in a freshwater river? ?

  • Can java moss grow natrually in a freshwater river/ stream any info you have ill take it Thanks!

  • Answer:

Well, they do grow in freshwater environments in their native environment in Southeast Asia, but they're adaptable to brackish water. But they need to live in tropical, or near-tropical water conditions. Did you think you found some elsewhere? It probably isn't Java moss, but there are some native mosses and spikemosses in the US that look like them. Willow moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) would be my first guess, especially if it was found in a stream where the outside temperature would get cold. That would be followed by Selaginella spp. which usually grow out of the water, but can take periods of being underwater, too (Java moss grows well outside of water as long as the soil stays moist!). But if what you have is willow moss, it doesn't make a good aquarium plant - it needs cold water temperature or it will die. So unless you have a chiller on your tank...
