Where on the leaf is the stomata and what is it's function?

Is there more stomata on the underside of a leaf or the upper surface.whats an experiment that can find it out

  • i have to come up with and experiment to find if the number of stomata on the underside of a leaf is more less or the same as, on the upper surface of a leaf?

  • Answer:

There is usually MANY MANY more under the leaf that on top. Many plant species have none on the top surface. I did some research on plants, where I compared the numbers of stomata on the upper and lower surfaces...... thinking what EXACTLY you need to do for this experiment. You could count them too??? I would take some leaves....try shiny/waxy leaves and you can either peel on the cuticle ( VERY thin transparent layer NOT green) and look under a microscope. You can also use clear nail polish to also make a peel to look at this..... hmm thinking about it, maybe you could use clear nail polish to paint the leaves and see what happens to them You could have some leaves...on the same plant, that are not painted..control, some that are painted on the underside, some on the top surface and some painted on both sides. Wait for a period of time, maybe a week or two and go back and look at the health of the leaves. Again I would use leaves that are smooth on both sides as its easier to apply the nail polish....you could then look at the surfaces to confirm your results by looking at numbers on either side of the leaf.
