How do seeds sprout in the dark?

when a seed is soaked in a dark room, it sprouts, what increases the size of that sprout since photosynthesis can not occur?

The seed does not need light to sprout because it uses the energy stored in the seed itself to start growth. However after this initial energy is used up and there is no light the plant will die.
