What is the importance of double fertilization?

What is the difference between self-fertilization and cross-fertilization?

  • What is the difference between self-fertilization and cross-fertilization?

  • Answer:

well to start with not possible for humans but in the plant and some animal worlds it is possible and does happen. some plants have both male and female organs so to speak to reproduce without another whereas cross fertilization requires another of the opposite sex to reproduce which is usually done by bees, butterflies or birds and even some insects and other animals. some plants such as paw paw do produce both male and female flowers, others such as apples need another apple of a different sort to reproduce. this is a very complex situation and all is not yet known.

Other answers

Self-fertilization usually occurs in case of bisexual organisms, while cross-fertilization occurs in both unisexual and bisexual organism. Bisexual organisms undergo cross-fertilization only when male and female gametes don't mature at the same time.

The answer is in the name... Self-fertilization is when you don't need anyone else to fertilize you. You can impregnate yourself. There's no male/female difference. Cross-fertilization is when you need another member of the same species and opposite sex to fertilize you (Only if you're a female)

Self fertilisation is when a plant has a male and female organ of which the male fertilises the female and cross fertilisation is what bees do.
