Green algae are true algae that have green chlorophylls a and b as their photosyntheitc pigments. "Blue green algae" is not a termed that is used in scientific circles anymore. In addition to chlorophyll a, cyanobacteria also have two pigments called phycoerythrin and phycocyanin. "Cyano" means "blue," and some cyanobacteria, becuase of their phycocyanin, have a greenish blue cast.
