Career path out of marine biology?

Is plant biology a decent major/career path to follow?

  • I've always been somewhat interested in plant biology, but I'm also interested in something that can pay off in terms of salary. What can I expect in pursuing plant biology?

  • Answer:

In this economy you may have a hard time finding a job in that field. I went to school for Biology and Environmental science and graduated in 2008. I had a really tough time finding a job, but eventually landed in a waste water treatment lab. It is not bad, but it is definitely not what I envisioned doing for a career. I make decent money, but I'll never forget what someone told me about what to expect in salary for these types of careers. He said " Don't expect to get rich, because most times you won't in this career path" That statement scared me, but I stuck with my choice and I'm glad I didn't quit. You won't make as much as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or chemist, but you will like what you are doing and I think that is what's most important. Consider majoring in Biology and minoring in plant science. That way it gives you some lead room and broad experience so you will be more marketable to more types of jobs. Good Luck!
