How long does green algae grow?

How much algae would grow in a cup with water and fertilizer in it?

  • I tried growing Euglena Algae in clear plastic cups with different concentrations of fertilizer in the different cups. My first cup has 200 mL of filtered water and 2 tablespoons of algae in it. If I were to add 15 mL of watered down miracle grow to it, how many grams of algae do you think would be in the cup after 10 days? Estimates would be perfect, anything more specific would also be welcomed! Thanks to all who answer.

  • Answer:

That depends on whats in miracle grow. does it have nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium? does it have a lot of these ingredients? or only a little? you also have to do research on what your specific type of algae needs for nutrients.also does it have silica and iron? algae although easy to grow when you don't want it, aren't like land plants in that you can just give them any old fertilizer and expect them to grow. they require a specific formula to grow happily. if you don't want to put effort in researching it's full requirements I do have an easy answer for you. most algae happily live in the same water as fish. fish (just by living) provide more than enough nutrients for algae to thrive. if you can find out what nutrients fish give off on a regular basis, you'll have some happy algae.
