Does increased carbon dioxide (co2)affect the growth of plants?

  • i am doing this experiment for a science fair project: does increased carbon dioxide affect the growth of plants? i was wondering if someone had already done this experiment or a similar experiment like this.. and if they could share their results with me.. please tell me what type of plant you used and how much carbondioxide (co2) you used.

  • Answer:

I have not done this experiment, but I looked at a couple of articles online about this topic. The article cited below says that C3 plants could have an increase of about 25% in the rate of photosynthesis, but that there isn't much of an effect on C4 plants because they are already quite efficient. The article says that corn is a C4 plant, so you wouldn't want to use that. Be sure to look at the article because it reminds you that the plant will also need extra nutrients and water and that there's a saturation point beyond which the rate will not increase. What's a C3 plant that's easy to grow and easy to get? Oat, barley, wheat, chrysanthemum, sunflower, tobacco, bean, pea, rose, celery, coleus, catnip, mint, salvia. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=35005

CO2 is taken in and converted to glucose and O2 is released. An increase in glucose may cause it to grow larger, however, CO2 intake is done by diffusion. So, if the plant has enough CO2 then the equilibrium point will have been reached and CO2 will not be able to diffuse. So, my hypothesis is probably not.
