Monocots and Dicots...PLZ HELP!!!?

• Do you think there are more monocots or dicots growing on Earth? Why? How might you research the answer to this question? Monocot: Has one cotyledon or seed leaf, fibrous roots, narrow leaves with parallel veins, and flowers whose petals occur in multiples of three. Dicot: Has two cotyledon or seed leaf, tap roots, leaves with branched veins, and petals which occur in multiples of four or five.

  The angiosperms in total account for about 260,000 species, and only about 60,000 are monocots. The rest are dicots. Thus there are roughly 3 times more dicots than monocot species. Why is always a difficult question, but I will try to answer this. First, there is a 'fuzziness' is defining the two classes of plants and some botanists consider monocots a subgroup within the broader group of angisperms dominated by the dicots. However, the main reason might be that while most seed plants increase their diameter through secondary growth, producing wood and bark, monocots have lost this ability, and so do not produce wood. Some monocots can produce a substitute however, as in the palms and agaves. Nevertheless, fewer large tree-like species of monocots exist and the monocots are dominated by grasses that have a very particular nitch in the environment.
