Recycling experiment? anyone?

Can anyone give me an at home experiment to comapre sucrose and high fructose corn syrup?

  • I'm doing an experiment for my high school Bio II CP class and i need a quick, at home experiment to see which is the better sweetener. It has to be comparing sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup. I know sucrose is healthier but I still need an experiment to prove that! I would REALLY appreciate some help because I can't find anything online!

  • Answer:

I'll assume the instructor provided pure high fructose corn syrup . You need to calculate/look up the weight of one mole of sucrose and one mole of high fructose corn syrup. Then you need to calculate/look up the number of calories (Kcalories) delivered to the body by one mole of each. Then you prepare, say six samples of lemonade made with six different amounts of each sweetener. Ask people to rate the sweetness -- look for the point where too acid/bitter becomes drinkable, because different people like different amounts of sweetness. The sweetener that delivers the best taste with the least calories consumes is the "sweetest". Molecular weight of sucrose (C12H22O11) is 342.12 grams. I believe there's enough info in these references to do the type of experiment described above.
