No palm trees in Georgia?

How far north on the east coast of the United States do palm trees grow?

  • do palm trees make it up to Virginia and Washington DC or even New York city. How far north in the United States do they grow and where is the limit? What about states like Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Illinois,Oregon, Kansas,?

  • Answer:

There are the cold tolerant ones which are widely planted as far north as Virginia Beach and can be found in gardens in DC and NYC. Tropical palm trees (the coconut palm is the most widely grown) can only survive permenantly as far north as Jupiter florida, but there are a few in Sea world orlando that are protected by the warm dolphin pool, and there are a few in St. Augustine Florida near the water where temps dont get too cold. Coconut palms can only grow in Florida and the Hawaii in the US, they cannot be grown in califnrnia because they need warmer temps. A very common palm in florida is the sabal palm which is widely grown all the way up the coast to virginia beach, but only do well by coastal areas. With protection they can be grown as far north as NYC, but windmill palms and needle palms are much more common there. Good luck, and I hope this answers your question!
