How many cells are in fruits?

Are the cells of fruits and vegetables still alive?!?!?

  • I'm eating a banana right now, and i've been wondering, since they've been picked from the tree or plant, i.e, severed from it, that must mean it's dead. Just like how a rat's tail rots when severed from the rat. The cells of it are dead. However, it takes days for fruits and vegetables before a fruit or vegetable starts to rot. That must mean the cells of fruits and vegetables are still alive! It seems to be a disturbing thought that i'm actually eating something (a banana) alive right now. Is my banana still alive right now?

  • Answer:

Technically yes, as long as the cells still have resources to continue functioning they are alive. The cells of fruits typically have a lot of sugars which keeps them functioning for some time after they leave the tree.Fruits are made like this so that they can provide the developing embryo with nutrients until the embryo is ready to sprout into a seed. So think about it, if a shoots and roots can emerge from a fruit that has dropped from a tree then it has life and it is breeding new life.

The fruits are developed in such a way that they are rich in Glucose, fats, proteins, etc. This is to provide nourishment to the seed which germinates into a new plant. So technically the fruits and plants are alive.

If it moo's slice it's neck, drain its blood, cut out its muscles and heat them up. That would be more appetizing.
