What kind of spider was it?

What kind of spider is this?

  • http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/306628_10151446748125106_885655105_23521112_1079739284_n.jpg The past couple of weeks, I've noticed a lot of spider activity in my house. I mainly see them running around on my ceiling. I've never seen this species of spider before, and I just want to make sure it isn't a species of spider I should be worried about. Once in a while, I do see other spiders, but I've already been able to identify them as harmless. I've already tried to find out what kind of spiders I'm dealing with, by comparing my spider picture with Google pictures, and I found one that sort of matches, but I still can't positively identify it. I won’t say what kind of spider I "think" it is because I don't want to influence anyone’s answer. If there is anyone who can help, I will appreciate it very much!

  • Answer:

If you live near a source of water like lakes, streams, ponds,or rivers, this may be a member of the Pisauridae family, likely Dolomedes genus, commonly called fishing spiders. Like the other spiders you are finding, these are quite harmless. http://bugguide.net/node/view/1985/bgimage A good look at the eyes can confirm this: http://bugguide.net/node/view/420215/bgimage I would have suspected a huntsman spider, but Iowa is just to far north for their range.

Looks like a common grass spider of some type. The key to identifying most spider species is the eye arrangement. You are not in the right part of the country for a Brown Recluse and they have a very distinctive eye arrangement of 3 pairs shared by few other species (most spiders have 4 pairs of eyes).

Dude don't touch that. Jk. The spider is harmless. It's actually more afraid of you than you are of them. Don't kill it. It can be helpful now that it's spring and flies come.

It looks sort of brown recluse-y to me. But im no spider expert
