Can I become a good rower?

Can a rower become a coxswain in college?

  • I am rowing on a junior rowing team for my second year. I'm definitely not one of the best rowers and I don't think that there is much of a chance for me to get recruited for college by rowing. But since I am a lightweight rower I technically could cox for college men since the minimum weight is 125 lbs and I am 128 lbs. I'm not good enough to compete at the college level but I really love the sport and I want to stay in it in another way. Would I be able to be recruited as a coxswain if I have never coxed before?

    You can always join a club or walk-on if you want to continue rowing. But I'm in the same situation as you: I'm small and a rower. I do know a few girls in my club who went on to be coxswains in college who rowed in high school, but if you like rowing stick with rowing. Colleges do like rowers to turn into coxswains since they know all the terms, know what to say, ect.,

Never sell yourself short. You can probably add the weight through lots of weight lifting. I'm in college and we have 2 people in our varsity who are 5-8 to 5-10 and 160. That's fairly small for a hwt team. On the other hand, if you don't want to row you can always join any club, as well as become a walk-on. If you know the stroke well, i.e. can teach it to a blind person without touching them (think about it) then you can probably be a decent cox. You do have to make sure however, that you are passionate about the sport. If you're allowed to, try coxing one of your teammates on the erg, and see what they have to say. You might be amazing, you might be the next olympic coxswain, or you might be extremely annoying and repetitive. Call up the coach at some schools, even if you do not actually want to attend classes there. Tell them your story, and hopefully the'd let you know if you have a chance. -Rowstrong
