Surfboard roof rack - Surfboard lifting in air when driving?
-
I recently bought a surfboard and a Alder portable roof rack system (as can be seen in the link below this question) to use to trasport my 8ft surfboard on top of my peugeot 106 zest. I have used it twice now, and both times the surfboard would rise up into the air, about a foot whilst being secured on the roof. I don't think there was a chance of it coming lose and flying off, but no matter how hard I tied it down, or combinations of fittings and knots I tried, the same problem kept happening. I also tried different positionings of my board on the roof, tail in front (heavier) etc but nothing helped. Is this normal with a portable, tie on roof rack and surf board? Should I opt for a hard roof rack? http://www.kitesurfingtorquay.co.uk/custom/images/products/S%20rack%5B1%5D.png

Answer:
I have hard racks, and get this problem when I don't secure it tight enough... Just tie down your board tighter and you'll be fine, your saying "no matter how hard I tie it down" is absolutely false. I've gone at freeway speeds (65+ knots) with a 170 L sailboard and 8 foot longboard on top of that and not had it move, just out of tying it down hard enough, but if I don't put much effort in I'll encounter lift going about 30 knots... If it has two separate places where board attaches to car, it can be tightened tight enough. Try tying a rope HARD from the front of the board to the front of the car, but if there's slack in the rope it won't work...

its hard to say? so you have the straps with the pinchers on them or is it just a rope. if you have the rope i say ditch those. those are unreliable and i have actually lost a board that i had stacked on top (luckilly i was only going 10 mph in a subdivision). i would invest in the straps because the do not come loose because of the buckles on them that pinch the strap tighter as it pulls harder. every surf shop has them and a set is about $15. if you have those already then tight is never tight enough. as long as you have the rack pads then tie that board down TIGHT.

This type of rack secures the board all around so lifting isn't a major problem. It's not made to handle long trips so much. It's designed so it doesn't dig into the board under strain. You should only worry if the board slips along the strapping.
